Saturday 14th July 2007

For the second year in a row Killymoon Rangers welcomed Irish League 'giants' Glentoran to Cookstown and despite not being able to repeat last year's great result this was another enjoyable day for all involved with the club.

With the sun shining for a change a crowd of over 300 watched as Glentoran started brightly and caused some early panic in the home defence, but it was David McMullan who had the first shot on target, requiring Michael Dougherty in the Glentoran goal to react quickly and knock the ball out for a corner. Glentoran were awarded a penalty after 12 minutes when the referee spotted an incident in the Killymoon penalty area and pointed to the spot, but guest keeper Simon Ferguson produced an excellent save from Kyle Neill to keep the scores level. Despite plenty of pressure Glentoran were finding it difficult to break down the home defence and when they did create chances a combination of poor finishing and desperate defending kept them out.
With the teams deadlocked at half-time it took a Glentoran veteran to eventually break down Killymoon's resistance. Tim McCann played a one-two just inside the Killymoon penalty area and struck his shot hard and low into the corner of the net to the relief of the travelling support. After beating PSNI 9-1 the previous Saturday it could have been expected that Glentoran would go on and wrap up the match in style, but to their credit the Killymoon players kept battling and ensured that their visitors had to fight hard for their victory. On a rare Killymoon attack Warren Smith had a chance to test the Glentoran keeper but his shot was deflected for a corner by a defender. Glentoran did come close to extending their lead on numerous occasions, with David Scullion rattling the cross-bar with a vicious shot, but it took a late penalty to finally wrap up the victory. Adrian Ferson looked to have made a foul just outside the penalty area but to the surprise of the spectators the assistant referee indicated a penalty and the referee pointed to the spot for the second time. Michael Ward made no mistake for the Glens to give them a 2 nil victory.
Despite the result this was another important day in Killymoon's history and all the players can be proud with their performances against a very strong Glentoran side.
