Former Linfield defender Jeff Spiers brought his young charges to Cookstown last Saturday as Killymoon finished their pre-season matches at the Mid-Ulster Sports Arena. After under par performances in the previous 2 matches the Killymoon players were playing for their places in this Saturday’s opening league match, but within 5 minutes they found themselves a goal down. With the home defence looking for off-side the Crusaders right winger found space and fired past Gareth Maguire in the Killymoon goal. This gave the young Crusaders side an early lift and Killymoon were finding it difficult to keep up with their movement and it took a goal on 15 minutes for the home side to get back into the game. A neat move on the edge of the Crusaders penalty area resulted in Steven Purvis getting in behind the defence and he made no mistake from a narrow angle. This gave Killymoon the confidence to take the game to their visitors and they started to show some of the form they displayed last season. With Warren Smith and William Montgomery re-united upfront after a season away from the club and Craig Martin learning a new role on the right of the midfield, the team was starting to gel and it was Killymoon who ended the half the strongest although they were unable to add to Purvis’ equalising goal.

The second half was an even affair with both teams going for the win and it looked like Killymoon had the first chance early after the re-start. A cross from the right looked to be reaching Martin Bogan 10 yards from goal, but the ball was cut out by a defender who used his hand in the process however, the referee waved play on to the relief of the visitors. Most of the play was reserved for the middle of the park with both teams restricted to half chances with Killymoon’s best chance falling to W. Smith, but his shot from a narrow angle saw the Crusaders keeper produce an excellent save from close range. With the game looking likely to end in a draw, Crusaders had a 2 great chance to win it at the end. The first chance required a save from Maguire and a goal line clearance by Graham Brown and shortly after with Killymoon looking for an off-side decision the referee played on and it took the quick reactions of keeper Maguire to save at the feet of an on-rushing forward and this turned out to be the last action of the match.

This was a better performance by the Killymoon side before Saturday’s opener away to Lurgan Town and then travelling to Fivemiletown next Tuesday. With captain David McMullan, Adrian Ferson and Francisco Gomes missing on Saturday it gives other players a chance to stake their claim what will again be a long and hard season for the Cookstown lads.
