Killymoon Rangers 1
Ards 3
Saturday 4 Oct 2008, IFA Championship
2:30 pm Kick off. Mid Ulster Sports Arena
A Darren Fitzgerald hat-trick proved to be the difference between the sides at a wet and windy Mid Ulster Sports Arena last Saturday. Yet again it was the same old story for Rangers this season - they can take a lot of positives, especially from their second half performance, but no points and remain rooted to the bottom of the league table.
The first half was a scrappy affair with both teams struggling to cope with the difficult conditions. Ards took an early lead when the referee awarded a penalty after a scramble in the Killymoon area and Fitzgerald made no mistake from the spot. Rangers had a penalty claim of their own turned down before Fitzgerald doubled Ards' lead. A foul by Gary Crooks twenty yards from goal gave Ards a free-kick and the striker produced a superb curling shot that left Maguire stranded. With only twenty minutes gone many expected Rangers to fold but this was far from the case as they tried to lift the pace of the game but lacked the composure in the final third to produce the killer pass. With minutes left in the half another Ards penalty seemed to sow the game up for the visitors but an Adrian Ferson header on the stroke of half time gave Killymoon hope for the next forty-five minutes. Half-time score 3-1 to Ards.
Killymoon came out in positive fashion for the second period and took the game to Ards right from the off. However it wasn't until the final fifteen minutes that they were able to make any real inroads into a well organised visiting defence. Warren Smith clipped the cross-bar with a curling free-kick and also went close from inside the six yard box after a goal-mouth scramble.
