Mid Ulster Shield - Round 3
1:30pm ko @ Fairhill, Cookstown
Killymoon Rangers hosted Newry side Ashgrove Rovers in the 3rd round of the Mid Ulster Shield on Saturday 11th November, with the winner taking a place in the quarter final.
Killymoon started brightly with several early efforts flying wide from Christopher McNicholl and Stefan Shields. At the other end, rookie goalkeeper Connor Halferty was making his debut in goals and produced two2 excellent one-on-one saves to keep his team well in the game.
It took 25 minutes for the deadlock to be broken, when long serving striker Warren Smith headed home with ease from a Chris McNicholl corner kick. The home side kicked on a gear after this and shortly after added goal number two, frustrated frontman McNicholl finally getting his goal after a few earlier chances went begging. A great finish, worthy of putting Killymoon 2 up at the halftime break.
The second half saw Killymoon start slow and again the young goalkeeper was called into action punching clear from a couple of Ashgrove set pieces. Defenders Eoin Coyle and Declan Campbell were having an equally busy time down each flank, with the pair working very hard up and down throughout the contest. Robert Allen had an effort fly over the bar on the 60th minute and Willy Frizelle had similar effort moments later.
Shortly after Killymoon got the important third goal through Richard Donaghy, which killed the game and allowed the manager to bring on fresh legs in the form of Ciaran Blake and Mervyn Kirk.
The substitutions worked well providing extra depth and Killymoon went on to add a fourth goal in the 85th minute. Richard Donaghy found himself in space in the opposition box and hit home his second of the game. Killymoon finished strong, keeping intact a clean sheet for the first time this season, mainly through sheer determination and stubbornness of the back line and young inform goalkeeper.
The Man of the Match award could have went to any number of players on the day, the supporters finally deciding Declan Campbell was the worthy recipient.
